Civil War diary of Irwin C. Fox [manuscript], 1861-1862, 1865.

Fox's diary, portions of which are missing or out of chronological order, includes detailed accounts of marches, camps, disease, rumors, troop movements and campaigns, especially around Cheat Mountain under future Union General Robert Milroy, and around the Shenandoah Valley and Fredericksburg. Some particularly interesting passages include a description of a train derailment, reporting on Lee's surrender and Lincoln's assassination, and camp life at the end of the Civil War when soldiers were waiting to be sent home.

Milroy, Robert Huston, 1816-1890

Milroy was born on a farm near the hamlet of Canton, five miles east of Salem, Indiana, but the family moved to Carroll County in 1826. He graduated from Norwich Academy in Vermont in 1843. He moved to Texas in 1845, returning to Indiana in 1847. He was a captain in the 1st Indiana Volunteers during the Mexican War, but did not see any combat action.
